God wasn’t just looking for the Israelites to just kill a bunch of animals for the sake of killing them. And the Israelites didn’t have to do the offerings to earn God’s favor. He wanted to have a relationship with them and He pursued the Israelites.

Now that the sacrifices were set up in Israel, it was time to set the positions of those that would oversee them. This position wasn’t just about killing an animal, offering some incense, and we’re good for the day. Rather, it was very important that the priest not only represent God correctly but as we’ll see, that they treated God as holy.

Laws that were given to the Israelites so that they remained clean and to prevent disease, were only implemented around 100 years ago as common practices for public and personal hygiene. Laws were given on what could and could not be eaten. As well as who, and yes what, was allowed to have a relationship with.

God wanted to have such a deep relationship with the Israelites. It was God that pursued them and brought them out of the land of Egypt. But to keep that relationship with God, the Israelites need to step into obedience so that they could walk in that deeper relationship... Yes, that obedience included the removal of child Sacrifice!

God knew that the Israelites wouldn’t keep the law and commandments perfectly. Therefore, as He wraps up the covenant with the Israelites, He reminds them of the consequences of following and not following the law. But God isn’t out to destroy them for not obeying. He gives phases in which God disciplines the Israelites so that they would come back to the path of following Him. Just like any good parent would discipline their child so that they walk the correct path.

However, because of their disobedience, they were not allowed to enter the promised land. Instead, a whole generation would die off walking around in the wilderness.
